Rouven Porz is working as the head of the Medical Ethics Unit in the ‘Inselspital’, the University Hospital in Bern (Insel Gruppe, Medical Faculty Bern) in Switzerland. In his institution, he also acts as coordinator for Professional Medical Education.
He is trained as a Molecular Biologist, with additional master studies both in Philosophy and Educational Theory at the University of Saarbrücken, Germany. In his PhD and post-doc projects in Basel (Switzerland), Porz conducted empirical and conceptual research in the field of bioethics, focusing mainly but not exclusively on the patients’ perspectives in the fields of genetic testing, reproductive medicine and stem cell research. Since 2008, his clinical and research work has been dedicated to the professionalization of clinical ethics.
Among others, he held visiting scholarships in Maastricht (The Netherlands), Newcastle-upon Tyne (UK), Geneva (Brocher Foundation, Switzerland) and Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Currently he is Visiting Professor in Rumania, Cluj-Napoca. In addition, he is the past-editor, past-secretary and also past-president of the EACME (European Association of Centres of Medical Ethics), currently board member of the Ethics Committee of Swisstransplant and editorial board member of the Schweizerische Ärztezeitung.
